Call The Midwife's Jenny Agutter reveals series eight starts filming today as she poses for a picture behind the scenes

The actress, who plays Sister Julienne on the hit programme,  posed up with a clapper board today to announce the news.

The Call The Midwife team captioned the shot, which sees the star in full costume: “It's happening!!! Series 8 of #callthemidwife has just started filming!! @BBCOne.”

The news will no doubt go down very well with fans as series seven recently came to an end.

It was a bag of mixed emotions for viewers after they saw Nurse Barbara (Charlotte Ritchie) die from meningitis complications in the penultimate episode.

The final episode saw old favourites Trixie (Helen George), Chummy (Miranda Hart) and Barbara make an appearance in a projection of happier moments.

The clips flickered in front of a hall packed with people celebrating Sister Monica Joan's birthday.

There was one final reminder at the loss of Barbara when the camera showed a toy carousel resting atop her grave. The significance of the toy not lost on fans who remembered her riding a real life merry-go-round just a year ago on her wedding day.

Charlotte recently revealed she "howled like a child" when she watched her character Nurse Barbara's tragic death.

Speaking on Lorraine, she said: "I knew it was going to happen and I still howled like a child, which feels really weird.

"I have known for a long time and I was wishing I wouldn't cry, as I think there's something weirdly narcissistic about crying about your own death.

"But it was just everything, it was saying goodbye to the show, I love it so much. But it was done beautifully and I feel really glad and really proud that I got to say goodbye in that way. I was a fan before I joined [the show]."
