It turns out we’ve been applying dry shampoo wrong and that’s why we’re left with chalky roots [Getty]
Whether you’re a massive fan of the stuff, or someone who’s never quite understood the appeal, this dry shampoo hack is about to change everything.
When it comes to using dry shampoo, it usually goes something like this:
Wake up late for work, get dressed in a mismatched outfit, spritz the stuff in your hair and then run out the door with no time to spare.
And that’s what usually leaves people disappointed with the stuff: instead of looking Kate MIddleton-esque like you’ve emerged fresh from a blowdry, you’re more likely left with white, chalky patches that haven’t quite soaked up the grease.

That’s because the real benefits of dry shampoo are not instantaneous.
To see real results, you need to work it through roots the night BEFORE you skip a wash.
While it doesn’t help on those manic mornings when you sleep through your alarm, it’s definitely worth noting for those evenings when you know you’ll need a quick hair refresh the next day.
And this is because the product is actually design to soak up grease overnight. Think of it as more of a preventive than a cure!

If you really want to get the most from your favourite dry shampoo, then give roots a quick whiz with a hair dryer the next morning, too.
This will rid your hair of any residue and actually leave you locks looking freshly washed.
Of course getting the perfect product also helps. At the moment we’re loving COLAB Extreme Volume Dry Shampoo New York, £4.50, FeelUnique.com, as it leaves hair fresh and voluptuous with an added fruit scent.
If your ends get dry as your roots get greasy, refresh ends with a good dry conditioner too like System Professional Instant Energy Dry Conditioner, £33.60, which is available in Wella salons.

When it comes to application, spraying the powder the night before isn’t the only way to maximise this beauty must-have.
According to Antonio Carral Calero, the Global Ambassador for Moroccanoil, so many people apply dry shampoo to close to the hair.
He told us: “In order to avoid the chalky look, I would recommend spraying the product about six to eight inches away from your roots and then spray it in two inch sections throughout your hair.
“You should make sure to massage the dry shampoo into your scalp thoroughly — as you would with regular shampoo — and gently go through afterwards with a thin brush or comb to fully work the product in.”

While many of us couldn’t imagine life without the stuff now (try getting through a festival without it!) other have raised concerns over the safety of the hair hero.
But previously, trichologist Mandy Baldwin gave OK! Online the honest low-down. She revealed: “When used correctly dry shampoo is a great convenient quick fix, it will soak up excess root grease and leave the hair with a refreshing smell.
“Over abuse (powder on top of powder) will result in the hair being dull, dry and the scalp becoming somewhat clogged and congested… Dry shampoo does not remove debris, impurities, bacteria etc. thus lack of cleansing will result in dandruff and other possible problems. Scalps that are already prone to eczema and dandruff will develop problems sooner.”
So, while it is a real miracle worker, try not become TOO reliant on the stuff.
