Ed Sheeran turned to fad diets as finding fame caused a crisis of confidence

HE has become the biggest male solo star in the world thanks to millions of record sales and a horde of A-list pals.

But ED SHEERAN has revealed the toll the music industry has taken on him away from the spotlight, admitting he struggled with his appearance and turned to fad diets after coming under scrutiny about his looks.

After the release of his second album Multiply in 2014, he said he began avoiding carbohydrates and beer in a bid to look like archetypal pop stars, and drank only vodka and slimline tonic.

Speaking on GEORGE EZRA & Friends: The Podcast, Ed said: “The reason I was doing it was because I was looking at people like JUSTIN BIEBER or the ONE DIRECTION lot and being like, ‘All these lot are so photogenic and they’ve got these six-packs and they look great’, and I was like, ‘I should look like that’.

“And then I kind of went, ‘Should I f***. I like beer, I like pizza. No one has bought my records based on me looking a certain way’.”

Last year Ed told me he had quit Twitter to try to escape the constant criticism he faced, but now says he has learned to accept himself after years of being judged.

In an emotional interview, he said: “I had zero insecurities before I became a singer, and I was born with ginger hair — that alone should have given me some sort of insecurities but I f***ing didn’t care.

“But then, as soon as you come in the public eye and people start picking holes in you, you start thinking these things are actually bad.”

Ed also revealed that a song he wrote for CAMILA CABELLO, The Boy, is now due to be on the next LITTLE MIX album.

He said of the song: “I was like, ‘If I was Camila, this is what I’d like to sing, and if I was a fan of Camila, I’d want her to have this’.”

Ed also revealed how PAUL McCARTNEY found out about him. Talking of his quest for fame, he said: “We basically did everything we could. I played on f***ing Hollyoaks. Randomly enough, when I met Paul McCartney, he said, ‘I saw you on Hollyoaks’.”

Now they know he is a fan, it’s about time Channel 4 tap up Macca for a cameo.

NME’s Best New Artist nominees THE MAGIC GANG – up against STEFFLON DON, J HUS, SIGRID, SZA and SHAME at tomorrow’s mag awards – have said they will release their self-titled debut album, on March 16.

THE VACCINES needed a remedy before making fourth album Combat Sports.

The rockers almost split up after drummer PETE ROBERTSON quit in 2016.

They held crisis talks before recruiting two new members. Guitarist FREDDIE COWAN said: “We lost one of our members and weren’t sure which direction we were going to head in – even if we wanted to head in any direction.”

Frontman JUSTIN HAYWARD-YOUNG, who also stayed in the group with bassist ARNI ARNASON, said: “The three of us went for a beer and we were like, ‘We still want to do this, right?’ And we agreed that.”

The band, left, will release the album on March 30, after keyboard player TIM LANHAM and drummer YOANN INTONTI joined.

They might regret turning into a five-piece when they have to split those royalties.

I HAVE bad news for any fans still clinging on to hopes of a 1D reunion.

The band – who have been on a two-year- “hiatus” – have just dissolved their touring company, indicating there are no plans to return any time soon.

Rollcall Touring Ltd, set up in 2012, will be officially struck off the business register at Companies House today.

HARRY STYLES, LIAM PAYNE, NIALL HORAN and LOUIS TOMLINSON filed papers setting the move in motion last November.

Since they called time on the band in 2015 after five years together, the boys have gone in very different directions with their solo careers.

Niall and Harry each released debut albums last year, with Liam and Louis set to follow suit in the coming months after a string of singles.

But after also going into acting with his debut in war epic Dunkirk, it will be the busy Harry who could hold up any potential reunion in the future.

Speaking last October about the prospect of reforming, Niall said: “It’s only been, like, two years so I’m not worried about it or anything.

“I’m not rushing it and I’m not worried that it won’t happen.”

After this update, perhaps he should be.

ALICIA VIKANDER has landed a role in dark new movie thriller The Marsh King’s Daughter.

She will play Helena Petterier, the young daughter of a man who kept her and her mother captive in the wilder-ness for years.

ROCHELLE HUMES is used to getting glammed up for THE SATURDAYS.

But she’ll be pulling out all the stops on Sunday after being announced as EE’s 2018 Bafta Film Awards red carpet host for the Royal Albert Hall bash.

And the colour is a given – because she will join stars on the night in black to support the Time’s Up movement against sexual harassment.

Rochelle, left, said: “Fashion plays a large part in what people love about the awards night.

“It is also a powerful tool for making a statement. That’s why I, along with many others, will be wearing black in support of the Time’s Up movement.”

The singer and presenter will invite guests to pose in a “style scanner”, letting fans shop from home for their favourite looks worn by the celebrities.

Don’t worry – the app will pick out affordable alternatives.

HER husband DAVID has forked out £27million to launch a footie team in Miami.

But VICTORIA BECKHAM is already hinting he’ll have to fight to win her as a fan.

The fashion designer wore London side West Ham’s colours, as seen on Irons’ winger MARKO ARNAUTOVIC as she left her New York Fashion Show on Sunday.

Eldest son BROOKLYN has made his own fashion statement, taking to Instagram to show off a new tattoo dedicated to his mum, top. I’m not sure Victoria will be impressed.

How to listen:

THERE are loads of tunes out this week – and I bring you the best of the bunch.

My Bizarre Jukebox Spotify playlist is updated every Tuesday with 15 tracks from my top artists and the best new talent.

Here are four from this week’s list.

This anti-Valentine’s anthem is a guaranteed hit for MARSHMELLO and ANNE-MARIE. It’s about telling off a childhood friend who keeps pestering to be more than a pal.

He’s cut off his hair, got rid of his hat and now JAMES BAY is back with his first tune in almost three years. Distorted vocals prove his music has changed image too.

MILEY’s little sister NOAH CYRUS has teamed up with Danish singer MØ for her poppiest single yet. She says it’s about fighting against “set ideas we have in our heads”.

SAARA AALTO is releasing three tracks and wants the public to pick which one she should sing when she represents Finland at Eurovision in May. This is my favourite.

Dannii Minogue proves you don't have to be going grey to pull off silver.

The singer slipped into this patterned grey and blue gown which matched her new locks, and sprawled out on a sofa for a striking shoot for Instyle hair magazine.

She completed the ice queen look with those metallic streaks.

Dannii recently teased that she could be up for a huge telly comeback by making a return to my favourite soap, Home and Away.

The Aussie, who played Emma Jackson in the popular series from 1989 to 1990 said: "The producers have made contact.

But if I did it, I'd want it to be short and sharp, in and out, because those schedules are huge."

That's just what summer bay needs.
