John Mahoney has died at the age of 77, passing away in a Chicago hospice.
The actor was best known for playing Martin Crane in the popular sitcom Frasier.
His character was the father of Kelsey Grammer’s titular character Frasier Crane and his brother Niles, and had a dog Eddie.

John was originally born in Blackpool, England after his pregnant mother was evacuated from Manchester to escape Nazi bombing raids.
He vowed to leave the UK to pursue acting and moved to American as a young man.
Following his move, he served in the US Army, revealing that to be the reason he lost his British accent.

Peri Gilpin, who played Roz Doyle in the show, paid tribute to him on Twitter.
Sharing a picture of him singing, she wrote: “John singing at my wedding. Watch Moonstruck, Say Anything and/or Frasier or anything you can with him in it and raise a glass to John. Remember him well.”
Frasier casting director Jeff Greenberg added on social media: “The great John Mahoney passed away today at age 77.

“I’ve not known a kinder man nor more brilliant actor. We were all blessed to have spent 11 glorious years together.”
John also did lots of voice work across his life, with parts in Atlantis: The Lost Empire, The Iron Giant, and Antz.
Later in his career, he said he enjoyed doing theatre work more, adding in 2004: “I don’t care if I never go in front of a camera again.”
