No, Samantha Bee And Roseanne Barr Are Not In The Same Boat

Remember the days when entertainment news wasn’t inflicted with political ideology every damn day? Yeah, me neither.

Samantha Bee, the host of the TBS show Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, has gotten herself into hot water after using choice language to describe Ivanka Trump. Bee laid into the White House senior advisor for Trump’s inaction concerning her father’s immigration policies.

“Let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dad’s immigration practices you feckless c–t!” stated Bee, before instructing Trump to “put on something tight and low cut” and go tell her “father to f––ing stop it.”

Almost instantly, people took to Twitter to compare Bee’s comment to that of Roseanne Barr, who, on Tuesday, tweeted a racist comment about a former Obama staffer. Following Barr’s tweet, ABC made the decision to cancel Roseanne.

Let’s be clear, there was absolutely no need for Bee to use such an offensive term to describe Trump. Her point could have easily been made without it. That said, let’s not create a false equivalency between Barr and Bee’s statements. Bee’s comment was rooted in Ivanka Trump’s political inaction and personal choices, whereas Barr’s comment used a slur to degrade Valerie Jarrett based on her race. Ivanka Trump’s position as a White House advisor is well under her own control. She deserves to be criticized accordingly and appropriately – and, yes, it’s possible to do both at the same time.

To add fuel to the fire, earlier today White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders weighed in on Bee’s comment.

“The language used by Samantha Bee last night is vile and vicious,” Sanders told The Wrap. “The collective silence by the left and its media allies is appalling.”

Bee has since issued an apology for her choice of words, calling them “inappropriate and inexcusable.”

In addition, TBS released a statement further condemning Bee’s language.

“Samantha Bee has taken the right action in apologizing for the vile and inappropriate language she used about Ivanka Trump last night,” read the network’s official comment. “Those words should have not been aired. It was our mistake too, and we regret it.”

And before you lose your mind in faux outrage over Bee’s comment, please remember Ivanka Trump is an adult woman in one of the most powerful positions in the country, not some defenseless broad locked away in an ivory tower.
