Oscar winning director Guillermo del Toro reveals he's secretly divorced wife after 31 years

The director announced the news that his 31-year marriage to Lorenza Newton was over just days after his Oscars victory.

He told Mexican magazine Reforma: “I separated in February and divorced in September. But few people knew.”

The 53-year-old sparked rumours that he was dating screenwriter Kim Morgan after they appeared on the Oscars red carpet together arm-in-arm.

However he has dismissed whispers that anything is going on.

He explained: “She is working with me, we have a nice friendship. In case some news appears, let's clarify that I separated in February. I started working with her at the end of the summer."

During his speech in which he scooped Best Director award the Mexican mentioned the screenwriter but failed to thank his estranged wife.

He said: “I want to thank the people who have come with me all the way – Kimmy, Robert, Gary, Wayne and George, and my kids.

“And I want to say, like Jimmy Cagney said once: ‘My mother thanks you, my father thanks you, my brothers and sisters thank you, and I thank you.’”

He also managed to have Oscars attendees in stitches with a cheeky jab at last year's ceremony.

He double-checked his Oscar winner's envelope to make sure there hadn't been another balls up.

The Shape of Water helmer had viewers in stitches as he verified the win after grabbing the envelope from Warren Beatty during Academy Awards.

A strong year saw del Toro’s fantasy romance take the big gongs – winning big in Best Picture and Best Director categories.

Set in 1962, it follows the story of Elisa (Sally Hawkins), a cleaner who works in a top secret government laboratory in Baltimore.

Unexpectedly she falls in love with a highly classified scaly subject whose fate lies in the hands of the state and a marine biologist.

The Shape of Water was nominated in the Best Picture Award category at the Oscars 2018.

It competed with war drama Dunkirk starring Harry Styles and coming of age tale Lady Bird, nominated in the same category.
