Pneumonia is an inflammatory condition of the lung and symptoms include: dry coughs, chest pain, fever and trouble breathing.

The radio personality tried to make light when he joked he was glad he got ill in the UK where there is a good NHS.

He wrote on Twitter: ‘Thank God I got ill in Britain (actually on the way to Britain, was taken off the plane in a wheelchair).

‘F**k all the ideology driven politicians who’ve messed up America’s healthcare system. Viva the NHS. Happy 70th.’

He also joked on Instagram: ‘It’s the NHS’s 70th birthday today. I hate to miss a party.’

MailOnline has approached Richard Bacon’s representatives for further comment.

The Los Angeles-based star credited formerly TOWIE star and now Extra presenter Mark Wright’s personal training routine for his great shirtless physique.

He told fans: ‘Haha. Mark Wright’s personal training.’ (sic)

Elsewhere, he discussed how discovering he had ADHD gave him understanding about why he took drugs as a Blue Peter presenter nearly 20 years ago.

In April, the TV host revealed his diagnosis helped him reflect on the difficult period where he was sacked from the children’s TV show after admitting to using cocaine.

He reflected on This Morning: ‘What’s interesting about that incident – that is almost 20 years ago now – is that it does follow you around.

‘But I work in America now… when I’m interviewed for jobs, I bring it up straight away because I know they are going to see it on google.

‘But it such a distant event, it doesn’t really seem to matter anymore. But the ADHD diagnosis made me understand that chapter of my life a bit more.

‘It’s too simplistic to say that having ADHD makes you take drink or makes you take drugs as a young man… there is an element you’re reaching for stimulants because you’re looking to mimic that blood flow.’
