Back on February 19, Russell, who found fame in The History Boys and Being Human, gushed to MailOnline about his engagement.

It’s all over: The actor, 36, confirmed his split from rugby coach fiancé Steve Brockman in an Instagram chat with fans on Sunday

‘Completely unexpected but very very happy and looking forward to having a proper party to celebrate when back in London,’ he said.

Steve is a former player for London’s Kings Cross Steelers that became the first gay inclusive rugby union club when it was founded in 1995.

It’s believed Steve has changed professions to become a rugby coach, after following his other half to the city and they had happily settled Stateside while Russell starred in US drama Quantico.

Steve moved across the world to be with Russell in 2017, while the actor starred in New York’s National Theatre show Angels In America, alongside Andrew Garfield.

Russell came out when he was 18 but didn’t begin to take on homosexual acting roles until he was aged 30 – a decision which he said ‘made his career’.

‘It wasn’t a conscious decision,’ he told The Guardian in 2017. ‘And it was only the other day that I realised it had been important somehow.

‘For so long, as a young actor, I had this anxiety about making sure I could get straight roles, and now I know that’s not necessary. The gay roles are the best for me. Being gay has made my career,’ he added.

The British star first hinted at a romance ‘inside the industry’ in November 2016, when he told the London’s Evening Standard about his ‘early days’ relationship.

Sharing his stance on marriage, he confirmed: ‘Totally, 100 per cent I will do it, when the time is right,’ and on children he added, ‘Yeah, all of it.’

He went on to say: ‘But I’ve got my dog at the minute — he’s my everything, my sun and my moon and my mate.’

Big day: Russell currently stars in TV cop drama Quantico alongside Priyanka Chopra who helped him celebrate his birthday on November 14 last year with a special cake on set
