Mel Owen is returning to the soap, played by Tamzin Outhwaite [BBC]
Her character, Mel Owen, left the BBC soap back in 2002, after four years.
The 46 year old will be back in Albert Square in scenes that will air next year.
And she has revealed what exactly led her to return to Walford.
Tamzin Outhwaite was on EastEnders from 1998 – 2002
Speaking to the Daily Mirror she admitted a fracture on her metatarsal forced her to pull out of a show on the West End – and it was this that made her reconsider a TV comeback.
“I’ve just done a couple of years of theatre, which I love, but now it’s time to do some telly,” she explained.
“Sometimes I think someone’s looking after you up there. That’s exactly what I need to do.”

She also revealed motherhood had swayed her decision – as her injury means she can spend more time with her two daughters, Florence and Marnie.
“My priorities have changed,” she added.
“Now I’m okay saying ‘No’. If I audition for things and don’t get them, there’s two beautiful faces looking at me and I’m home.”
Tamzin Outhwaite will be back on EastEnders next year[BBC]
No further details about Tamzin’s return to Eastenders have been released, other than she will be back at some point next year.
Her character left Walford back in 2002, after finding herself implicated in her late husband Steve Owen’s dodgy deals.
Mel was also close to both Phil Mitchell and Ian Beale on the show, getting into relationships with both.
