US musician Tom Petty has died in California aged 66, a statement issued on behalf of his family confirms.
“He died peacefully at 20:40 Pacific time (03:40 GMT Tuesday) surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends,” said his long-time manager Tony Dimitriades.
The American rocker was found unconscious, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest at his Malibu home early on Monday.

He was taken to hospital, but could not be revived and died on Monday evening.
Just a few hours before his death, Tom Petty’s daughter Annakim Violette Petty took to Instagram to blast the media in a profanity-laden outburst.
After premature reports of the rock star’s death began to circulate, his daughter heartbreakingly announced on Instagram that her father was — at that time — still alive, and clinging onto life.

“My dad is not dead yet” the singer’s daughter raged in the long post, just hours before his tragic death, alongside an old image of her father on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
Petty first hit the airwaves in 1976 with his group, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
He played his first UK concert in 18 years this summer at the British Summertime festival at Hyde Park with his band.

Just last week Petty finished his extensive 40th anniversary tour – which kicked off on April – at the Hollywood Bowl.
On Instagram he thanked his fans, writing: “Thanks to everyone for supporting us the last 40 years! Without YOU, there’d be no US!”
