Kieran Trippier was reduced to tears after coming off injured in the dying moments of England’s World Cup semi-final against Croatia.
The Spurs full-back had put England ahead after just five minutes with a brilliantly struck free-kick.
But Ivan Perisic levelled the tie in the second half taking it to extra-time. Mario Mandzukic then scored the winner in the 109th minute.
With just minutes to go and with England in desperate need of a goal, Trippier picked up an injury that meant he was unable to continue.
The 27-year-old limped off the pitch with the help of two members of England staff before taking a seat on the bench, where tears began to surface.
Trippier has been one of England’s brightest players at this World Cup and the sight of him crying was too much for England fans to bear.
One fan tweeted: "Kieran Trippier has been immense this tournament, so horrible to see him being helped off injured and in tears."
Another supporter posted: "Kieran Trippier crying has actually broken my heart a little bit."
Trippier took to Twitter the next morning to send an emotional message.
"Last night hurt and will for a while but we must take positives from the last few weeks and look forward to the future," he said.
"What a great set of England teammates and staff, it’s been a journey we can be proud of.
"Thank you to all the fans out here and back home for your support"
