While Alex Rodriguez has rehabilitated his image as a sports broadcaster and a gallant beau to Jennifer Lopez — there is still bad blood at his former home, Yankee Stadium, where some insist he’s bad luck.
Superstitious insiders at the ballpark were blaming A-Rod’s game attendance with J.Lo on Thursday night for snapping the team’s amazing winning streak against the dreaded Red Sox.
“There is no denying the fact that there was a collective groan when people saw [Rodriguez] because of the superstitions that come with the sport, and the fact that there always seems to be a dark cloud hanging over his head at Yankee Stadium — literally — and this cloud usually comes with thunder and lightning and a losing game,” said a Yankees source. The insider was referring to the downpour on Thursday — which stopped the game before the Red Sox went on to win — as well as A-Rod’s final day as a Yankee, when he took the field for a send-off ceremony just as thunder dramatically clapped and the sky opened up in a scene A-Rod himself called “biblical.” The Post’s front page professed at the time, “God hates A-Rod.”
The source continued of Thursday’s cataclysmic weather: “It was as if Mother Nature was reminding us that Alex’s past will always haunt him and hurt the team. They cannot rewrite history.”
While Rodriguez is on good terms with team owners the Steinbrenner family, another clubhouse faction thinks his presence still brings “bad juju,” and they began predicting a loss to the Red Sox the moment J-Rod arrived.
A pal of A-Rod’s chuckled, “He was good enough luck to have helped them win a championship in 2009.”
Rodriguez had a warmer welcome at “The Tonight Show” earlier Thursday, where Jimmy Fallon asked him about popping the question to J.Lo. She’d said that there’s “no pressure” for A-Rod to make things official.
But of Lopez’s hit “El Anillo,” in which she sings, “When will I get the ring?” Rodriguez added, “I read the song and I go, ‘Babe, it sounds like they’re talking about us.’ And she goes, ‘Yeah. They made it for me.’ ”
