If you had any trepidations about Disney’s live-action Aladdin, cast your worries aside. The film recently revealed that newcomer Mena Massoud would be playing the title character, and let’s just say, we are already obsessed. Not only does he have some striking resemblances to “Prince Ali” (hello, look at those abs!), but his inspiration for pursuing acting has a sweet connection to the original film. Plus, it seems like we’ll be seeing a lot more of him in the coming months. Get to know all you can about the latest Disney prince below.
All the Places You Might Have Seen Disney’s New Aladdin, Mena Massoud
Mena was born in Egypt, but raised in Canada. Now, he spends his time between Toronto and LA.
In a crazy twist of fate, Robin, who voiced Genie in the original Aladdin, played a significant role in Mena’s career. During an interview with The Hudsucker, the 24-year-old said the late actor was an inspiration “in everything he did. He was an incredibly well-rounded actor but I grew up on his role in Mrs. Doubtfire. That role by itself is very well-rounded and he goes through an amazing journey in that movie. I think it’s very underrated.”
In 2011, Mena got his breakout role when he guest-starred in season one of spy thriller Nikita.

While the Canadian actor never walked the halls of Degrassi High, a handful of his costars did. Mena is well-known for his role on Open Heart, which starred Degrassi alums Dylan Everett, Justin Kelly, and Christine Prosperi.
Don’t worry, Mena will have no problem pulling off those shirtless Aladdin scenes in the live-action movie. The actor is super into fitness and healthy living, which he so kindly documents on social media.
Aladdin isn’t the only place you’ll be seeing his face. He will also be appearing in Amazon’s Jack Ryan series alongside John Krasinski.
