In the four years he was at Arsenal, £12million full-back Mathieu Debuchy made just 29 appearances for the north London club.
He left in January 2018, six months before his contract at the Emirates was set to expire, signing for Ligue 1 side Saint Etienne on a free.
Many expected the now 32-year-old to fill in the gaps back in his home nation, helping his team out as an when required to do so.
But it seems the former Lille and Newcastle defender hasn’t given retirement a moment’s thought this season, and has been a revelation since returning to French football.
On Saturday, Debuchy was in action for his side against Strasbourg, and bagged the winner in their 1-0 away victory.
The goal was his fourth since signing for the club in January, making him the most prolific defender in Europe’s top five leagues in 2018.
Not only this but Saint Etienne have not lost a single match since Debuchy made his debut for the club in an away win against Amiens SC on February 2.
The right-back is the latest player to show signs of progression since leaving Arsenal for pastures new.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been the other prime example this season, after he stood out in Liverpool’s 3-0 Champions League demolition of Manchester City.
