From bridesmaid dresses to everyday where, ASOS has become THE online shopping destination [ASOS]
Probably not, right? Because if you’re anything like us, you’re too busy trying to desperately edit down your basket to keep it within three digits.
We’re so used to branding around the name ASOS — ‘This dress? Oh thanks, it’s from ASOS!’ or ‘Have you checked on ASOS?’ — that we don’t really stop to question it much.
But we should! Because did you know the online retailer wasn’t always called ASOS after all?
While some people did know this crucial information, evidently not all shoppers were in the know.
And it’s not just clothes ASOS are known for, as they also sell a whole host of accessories for a range of budgets [ASOS]
ASOS is in fact an acronym for what the fashion brand was originally called….
As Seen On Screen. Could it be more early Internet days?
One person recently wrote on Twitter: “ASOS stands for As Seen On Screen… Sorry?! I need time to process this.”
Another added: “OMG I can’t believe I just learned that @ASOS means as seen on screen I’m shooketh.”
A third agreed: “Omg I am SHOOK. ASOS stands for As Seen On Screen am so so so so unbelievably shook.”

A fourth questioned: “Am I the only one who just found out that ASOS stands for As Seen On Screen?”
The brand first opened it’s interweb shop in 2000, long before many of it’s big rivals, as was meant to be a celeb get-the-look type site.
In 2003, the retailer mixed things up with the new, catchier name and put the celeb angle to the side. It’s now the of the UK’s biggest e-commerce stores and home to over 850 brands.

Forget it’s global success, in the UK alone ASOS made over £600 million in 2016 with a profit increase of 27 per cent.
And we can only think to attribute that success to the ease of typing ASOS.com as oppose to AsSeenOnScreen.com into the search engine…
