Why Lionel Messi could miss Barcelona’s clash with Celta Vigo

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde has admitted he could rest Lionel Messi for Barcelona’s La Liga clash against Celta Vigo.

The Catalan giants travel to Vigo on Tuesday evening bidding to maintain their unbeaten league record this season.

But they take on Sevilla in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday as they look to win the domestic cup for the fourth successive season.

Barca will definitely be without Gerard Pique, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and Ivan Rakitic against Celta, and Valverde hasn’t ruled out adding Messi to the list of absentees.

"There will be changes to the team tomorrow because it’s an important week and because we go into it on the back of a run of intense games," he said.

“There’s a possibility that [Messi] rests, as is the case with other players.

“But there’s nothing to worry about. He played well the other day against Valencia. I don’t know what else to say, but they can relax in Argentina. There’s a long way to go before the World Cup.”

Lucas Digne has been passed fit to play while Yerry Mina and Aleix Vidal could make their returns from the wilderness.
