Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has revealed why he inked a new deal at Arsenal.
Ozil, 29, was set to become a free agent in the summer, with the former Real Madrid star’s contract set to end in June, reports Football.London.
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho – who worked with Ozil in Spain – had been keen on a potential reunion at Old Trafford this summer.
A move looked like it could be on the agenda for both, as Ozil refused to put pen to paper on an extension.
Fans feared the World Cup winner would follow Alexis Sanchez to United, but those fears were finally allayed on transfer deadline day in January when news broke that he had agreed to stay at Arsenal.
An official announcement followed a day later – but Ozil has never really explained what is was that prompted him to finally put pen to paper on the a deal that runs until 2021.
Speaking to Arsenal Player, the 29-year-old has now broken his silence, however. He said: “I’m really happy to sign here for such a big club like Arsenal. I’ve always said to the club that I’m happy here and now I’ve signed, I’m really happy.
“My team-mates and family have always supported me. I have a lot of goals here with the team, I want to reach those and I’m really happy.”
When asked what it was that convinced him, he added: “I like the club and I am happy. I love the city.
“Before I signed the contract, I spoke with my family about what the best decision was for me. At the end of the day, it was really easy for me to say ‘yes’ to the club.
"I’m here for more years and I hope we will win some titles with the team. I believe in that."
