Sky Sports News presenter Jim White says there was only one thing fellow Scot Sir Alex Ferguson wanted the last time he met him – one of his legendary yellow ties.
White has become one of the well-known faces of Sky’s transfer deadline day coverage, although his presence is almost overshadowed by the colour yellow that the broadcasters plaster all over the screen whenever deals are being completed.
And speaking to the Daily Star, White says that legendary former Manchester United boss Ferguson is a fan of the colour.
"In the early days of transfer deadline day, Sky chose a yellow strap on the bottom of the screen so yellow became the identifiable colour," he said.
"That has stuck. And that is why van drivers wind their windows down and ask ‘how’s the yellow tie?’
"The last time I interviewed Fergie he asked, ‘Where’s the yellow tie?’
"I had one for him in my pocket. He loved it."
Now 61, White is still working as hard as ever at both Sky and talkSPORT, and partly puts his woth ethic down to cutting out the booze.
"I was getting to the stage where, aged 52 or 53, were I couldn’t recover from a hangover," he said.
"And I couldn’t have just one drink, I needed six. My temptation was to go mad – and I did, on a regular basis.
"Those days have gone, and I’m so pleased. Your life improves immeasurably. And it’s good knowing I can go for a nice meal wit Katie (his girlfriend) and not be a basket case sitting opposite her."
