The Five Craziest Moments at Gucci

When Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele announced he was moving his spring 2019 fashion show from Milan to Paris, it was a very big deal. Huge. Massive! After all, Michele doesn’t just put on a show. He puts on The Show.

Opting to present on the first day of Paris Fashion Week, Michele did not disappoint. Below, the five craziest goings-on at Gucci:

1. Leather underwear! For spring!

Several men walked the runway wearing leather codpieces on top of their outfits. Should the sturdy skin be be too stiff for some, a satin embellished Birth-of-Venus variation closed the show.

2. The Mouse is in the House.

Last season, models carried molded casts of their own heads down the runway. This season, they toted Mickey Mouse’s head as a purse. Disney, but make it fashion.

3. Jane Birkin serenaded the VIP crowd.

As a part of his Paris takeover, Michele snagged the ultimate French icon Jane Birkin. She sang at his show, held at the iconic ‘70s nightclub Le Palace, in front of a VIP guest list that included Jared Leto, Faye Dunaway and Salma Hayek. Très chic.

4. A bird modeled in the show.

But not just any bird: a fluffy cockatoo perched comfortably on top of a human model’s shoulder as she looped around the runway. We’re calling it now: This bird is a preening star.

4. Pigs! Were flying!

We’re guessing (actually, hoping) that by accessorizing a model with a flying pig pin, it was Michele’s way of acknowledging that this is his over-the-top, utterly fantastical, glittery, rainbow world. And we’re just lucky to be living in it.
