BTS UN Speech, K-Pop Boyband Speaks at General Assembly

BTS is taking its message to a whole new audience.

On Monday, the K-Pop guys put on their best suits and attended the 73rd General Assembly of the United Nations in New York City. While they visited the annual conference, the boy band members got to speak about something close to their hearts.

Member RM (real name Kim Nam-joon) took to the podium to deliver a powerful speech that was aimed at the youths of the world. In the six-minute talk, RM discussed the group’s Love Myself campaign with UNICEF and how important it is to be a strong individual.

After thanking fans for their support on the campaign, RM talked a bit about himself. He told the audience about how he grew up in a small Korean town, and that when he was around 9 or 10 years old, he started to lose his individuality. But now, he doesn’t want that to happen to any other kid. He said that even though everyone has bad days, every person still has a place on this earth.

“Maybe I made a mistake yesterday, but yesterday’s me is still me,” he said. “Today, I am who I am with all my faults. Tomorrow, I might be a tiny bit wiser, and that’ll be me, too. These faults and mistakes are what I am, making up the brightest stars in the constellation of my life. I have come to love myself for who I am, for who I was, and for who I hope to become.”

The 24-year-old also talked about how important BTS fans have been to the Love Myself mission.

He said, “After releasing our Love Yourself albums and launching the Love Myself campaign, we started to hear remarkable stories from our fans all over the world, how our message helped them overcome the hardships in life and start loving themselves. Those stories constantly remind us of our responsibility… Our fans have become a major part of this campaign with their action and with their enthusiasm. We truly have the best fans in the world.”

After gushing about all of the group’s supporters, RM shifted his attention to the people at the assembly (and everyone watching at home) to give an important message.

“Let’s take all one more step,” he said. “We have learned to love ourselves, so now I urge you to speak yourself… No matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin color, your gender identity, just speak yourself.”

Now if you’ll excuse us, we have to go wipe the tears from our eyes!
