It’s fair to say that 2017 has been a dumpster fire for pretty much everyone except Ed Sheeran, and not satisfied with nabbing the Christmas Number 1 to end it, the singer has only gone and broken another record.
The singer’s record-breaking album ÷ has returned to the top spot of the Official Albums Chart for the seventh time – making it 19 weeks in total, and breaking the record for most stints at Number 1 by a male solo album.
That means the album has overtaken Sam Smith’s In the Lonely Hour, which had six periods and a total of eight weeks at the top back in 2015.
On top of that, Ed’s Christmas Number 1 single ‘Perfect’ has now extended to four weeks at the top spot of the Singles Chart. Not a bad way to round off the year.
And Sam will have to settle for Number 2 behind Ed in another way, with his latest album The Thrill of it All coming one behind in the Albums Chart.
Ed’s latest collaborative partner Eminem takes the third spot with Revival, dropping two places after scoring the No.1 spot last week.
Elsewhere in the Singles Chart, ‘Perfect’ is followed by Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’ and Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’. Ed also bagged a Number 4 with his Eminem collaboration ‘River’.
It seems that headlining Glastonbury, collaborating with Eminem and Beyoncé, bagging a Game of Thrones cameo and even getting an MBE just was not enough for the singer in 2017.
Maybe give someone else a chance in 2018, eh Ed?
