Scooter Braun on Why He Was Happy to Have ‘Despacito’ Top Charts in ‘Trump’s America’

With Scooter Braun rumored to be eyeing public office, is a run for governor of California in his future? “I did consider it,” he says. “But as a private citizen, I feel like this team [at SBP] can do a lot, and I’m going to focus on that.” In the meantime, Braun, who hosted a fundraiser at his home for Hillary Clinton during her presidential campaign, continues to support Democratic candidates. Here are his positions on key issues.

Gun Control: “The majority of the artists in Nashville want gun control. The majority of this country, 80%, believes in gun control, but our politicians aren’t representing the population. … Why won’t we listen to someone like Mark Kelly, who owns guns, who has served this country, who, along with his wife [former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords], is yelling from the top of his lungs to do the right thing? … I want to encourage all my friends in Nashville to be on the right side of history.”

Immigration: “I was so happy the majority of ‘Despacito’ was in Spanish, because I think it’s great to have a No. 1 song for 16 weeks in Donald Trump’s America be in Spanish.”

Racism: “Bigotry was there, and we got comfortable and ignored it. But we are in a really good position to continue eradicating racism and anti-Semitism — because it’s showing its face. All those Tiki torches came out in Charlottesville because a statue was being taken down. Things are changing, and that scares them. And because of certain circumstances, the bigots feel bold enough to show their faces. That was their mistake.”

Terrorism: “Manchester messed us up. We’re still processing. But we also realize that we get to go home. And many people, when they go home, their loved ones aren’t there. So we have a responsibility to them. … I don’t fear for my life as an individual. I fear for my life because I want to be there for my kids.”
