will.i.am has confirmed the news every Black Eyed Peas fan didn’t want to hear: Fergie has left the pop group.
The singer joined the Peas all the way back in 2002 – a year before their first major single ‘Where Is the Love?’ – but she hasn’t recorded with them since 2012 and has been more about her solo career in recent years.
So, will.i.am spoke to the English-language UAE entertainment magazine Ahlan! ahead of Black Eyed Peas’ gig at Saturday’s opening ceremony for the Champions League final in Cardiff.
The mag confirmed that Fergie has left the Peas and will.i.am explained: “Since the beginning of Black Eyed Peas, we’ve always had amazing vocalists that appeared on the mic with us.
“People like Macy Gray, Esthero, Debi Nova, Fergie. On Elephunk, there were several females that appeared on that album.
“Obviously Fergie was the featured female, but on songs like ‘Let’s Get it Started,’ it’s Noelle [Scaggs], and then Fergie, songs like ‘Latin Girls,’ it’s Debi Nova, and ‘Request Line,’ it’s Macy Gray. We’ll always work with good females.”
As for who could replace Fergie full-time, there have been rumours that former Pussycat Doll – and fellow UK reality TV judge – Nicole Scherzinger could get the gig.
But although will.i.am confirmed that Scherzy does feature on their new project, he didn’t “want to go into details how she’s involved yet”.
In fact, will.i.am went on to say that for “what people know The Black Eyed Peas to be, nobody is replacing Fergie”.
“She’s working on her solo project at the moment, we’re on this brand-new experience, celebrating 20 years of Black Eyed Peas putting out music,” he added to Ahlan!.
“We worked on a bunch of songs on her solo record, we’re proud that she has her label, but Black Eyed Peas are pushing it forward in terms of content, technology and experiences on our new project, Masters of the Sun.”
This project, Masters of the Sun—The Zombie Chronicles, is a zombie alien invasion hip-hop graphic novel will is putting out through Marvel in July. (It couldn’t be more will.i.am, could it?)
