Apple is working on second-generation wireless AirPods that could be released this year, according to a new Bloomberg report.
The report, which cites ‘people familiar with the matter’ said: “Like with its mobile devices – the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch – Apple intends to frequently update the AirPods with new hardware features.
“The Cupertino, California-based technology giant is working on a new version for release as soon as this year with an upgraded wireless chip, the people said.”
While Apple’s voice assistant, Siri, is available in the current generation of AirPods, users have to physically tap the earphones to activate it.
But according to the report, the new AirPods will have an upgraded wireless chip, which will allow the user to summon Siri, simply by saying “Hey, Siri!”
Apple is also planning a subsequent third-generation model for 2019, which will be water resistant, according to the report.
Since Apple released the AirPods in 2016, they have been one of the firm’s most popular products.
Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at KGI Securities, predicts that Apple shipped 13 to 14 million AirPods last year, and that this could be set to double to 26-28 million units this year.
