CES power outage can’t stop tech hotshots from showing off

LAS VEGAS — No power? No problem.

Despite an hour-long blackout that left two-thirds of the Las Vegas Convention Center in the dark — forcing thousands of gadget heads to exit the massive building — there were plenty of new tech toys unveiled Wednesday at CES 2018.

The folks at Atari went old school, unveiling a $2,799 Pong table that tries really hard to bring the iconic game, first released in 1972, to a much more demanding generation of tech geeks.

The game table, meant to be the centerpiece of a living room, has players on opposite sides using dials to control their paddles — but the paddles and physical square bouncing around are physical objects, not blinking lights.

Oh yeah, the table comes with built-in speakers and USB ports, plus Bluetooth connectivity, so that it can be used as a speaker system as well. It ships beginning in March.

For folks who like very clean windows — or simply hate to clean their windows — Korea-based WindowMate has released a Roomba-like robot that attaches to the inside and outside of your window and, with the push of a button, goes to cleaning.

It sells for $560 and the company has not said when it will be available.

While there are dozens of flying drones on the market, drones that swim are much rarer. One Chinese company, PowerVision, is trying to change that.

Its PowerDolphin is a drone with, yes, the aquadynamic physique of a dolphin. While the $749 water drone can take 4K photos and videos, the company promises that it can also deliver life preservers and vests to struggling swimmers, detect fish from over 100 feet away and release bait.

It is expected to be available starting in April.

Segway’s 90Fun Puppy 1 can make getting stranded at the airport almost enjoyable.

Using Segway’s famous auto-balancing software, the Puppy 1 is a carry-on bag that follows you around the airport like a lapdog, tilting precariously but never tipping over.

The bag features a removable battery so that it can get through airport security. If your Puppy 1 is snatched while trailing you to your gate, it will sound an alarm.

No pricing info was released. It will begin taking Kickstarter pre-orders in the second half of 2018.
