Canelo Alvarez confirms he WILL fight Gennady Golovkin in rematch on May 5 with talks almost complete

SAUL 'CANELO' ALVAREZ is closing in on a blockbuster rematch with Gennady Golovkin after the Mexican gave the green light to his promotional team.

That had been rumours that the Mexican bruiser may not want to face the Kazakh superstar again following their controversial draw in September.

But according to Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez, Canelo with negotiations are expected to be completed soon.

Gomez told ESPN Deportes: "We are close, we are advanced, Canelo wants the fight.

"He gave us the green light to close the fight and there are important details to reach an agreement, and once that happens we will work on the contracts.

"The focus is revenge. It's what Saul wants, what the public wants, we are close.

"There are details that must be refined, things that we are working on, but we are close."

The starry pair have been heading for a rematch since early October, with neither camp happy with the outcome of a controversial draw.

Las Vegas was also happy, as the event saw 1.5million pay-per-view sales, the third best in history.

The fight would take place on May 5, or Cinco de Mayo, a huge public holiday in Mexico.

Gomez said there is a possibility the fight could even be agreed by Christmas.

"Maybe," he added, "we will continue working until we reach an agreement, it is the most important thing for us.

"It's what Saul asked us, and we are working on those things. We continue working with Golovkin's people… we only wait for his answer."

Brit hero Billy Joe Saunders could face one of Canelo or Golovkin in a unification bout next year.

Saunders scored a stunning win over David Lemiuex to retain his WBO middleweight title, in front of Gomez and the Golden Boy team.

Saunders called out GGG after the win and has previously said he would like to fight Canelo.

But Gomez said Canelo and his team are not yet looking past Golovkin.

"We already knew he was a good fighter but what surprised us is how much he runs, he does not lend himself to fight," he said.

"He starts to run, it's a very annoying style.

"Canelo already fought with a similar style with Erislandy Lara and he passed it, the focus is the tiebreaker."” target=”_blank” title=”Click to share on Twitter
