Everton’s Europa League clash MFK Ruzomberok was supposed to be a sell-out… but social media whipped into frenzy over huge number of empty seats

The club have said that certain areas of the ground are ‘under construction’ but the swathes of blue left many shocked

Despite the club saying in the week that the Qualifying Third Round tie against MFK Ruzomberok was a sell-out, there were swathes of blue seats visible.

The masses of empty seats led many to ask why the game was deemed 'a sell-out'

And despite it being due to ongoing construction in the stands, it led to a wave of reaction on social media.

And Mason posted on Twitter his confusion that there were so many “empty seats in the main stand” when it was a sell-out.

Another posted that the Everton fans have all “dressed as plastic seats” for the game, while someone else asked if “the paint was still drying on the seats”.

Rafi Ali tweeted asking if fans were “banned from the game” while Keith Milner also seems amused that fans have “dressed as empty seats”.

Chelsea fan Jack Shepherd had a dig at title rivals Manchester City when he posted that Everton had “borrowed seats from the Etihad for tonight’s game”.

Manchester City are accused by many rival fans of failing to fill their ground for big games.

Andy Rees also took a swipe at Manchester City, saying that “Goodison Park was so empty it makes Man City look like they have a fanbase”.

And one Spurs fan posted on Twitter that if it wasn’t for the away fans, “Goodison would rival the Emirates for a dull atmosphere,” taking a dig at fierce rivals Arsenal.

And the commentators pointing out that the games was a “sell-out” provided some hilarity with social media users, who were quick to point out half of an entire stand being empty.

The club posted in the week that the family enclosure would be closed for tonight’s game, as well as a number of rows for maintenance issues.

And many Everton fans on Twitter were quick to point out to those highlighting the empty seats that this was the reason.
