Joe Gomez set for longer Liverpool deal and pay rise to £50k a week – easing his World Cup woe

The England centre-back has been ruled out of the World Cup after ankle surgery but is in line to be rewarded for his fine season.

Boss Jurgen Klopp wants the former Charlton defender in his plans next season.

And Gomez will get a contract extension to boost his wages to £50,000 a week.

The 21-year-old got into Gareth Southgate’s team on the back of his performances when he returned from a knee injury to start 21 Premier League games.

He signed new terms 18 months ago and still has four years left at Anfield but a new deal will cement his place as a key first-team player.

Gomez paid the price for helping his team in their Champions League run by rushing back after being crocked on international duty and aggravating his ankle injury.

But he is hopeful of being fit for the start of pre-season in July.

And earlier this month he said on Instagram: "I'm going to do all I can to get back and be in the best possible shape for pre season.

"Thank you for all the support over the course of the season."

Liverpool team-mate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is already out of the World Cup after suffering knee ligament damage in the Champions League semi-final first leg win over Roma.
