Liverpool vs Manchester City: Virgil van Dijk set to miss massive clash with thigh injury

VIRGIL VAN DIJK is set to miss Liverpool's huge clash with Manchester City.

The Liverpool Echo are reporting that the £75million defender has a tight hamstring and will not be risked by boss Jurgen Klopp.

If the Dutchman does miss the 4.00pm kick-off, Dejan Lovren is likely to replace him in the heart of the Reds defence.

Van Dijk's potential injury will be a massive blow to the hosts as they look to end City's Premier League undefeated run.

He enjoyed a dream debut for the Reds last week after scoring the winner in the Merseyside Derby against Everton to see the Reds into the fourth round.

But it looks like he will not be risked with the fixtures coming thick and fast in the second half of the season.

Liverpool were humiliated 5-0 by Pep Guardiola's impressive City at the Etihad back in September.

But the Reds will be encouraged by the fact that their opponents have not picked up a win at Anfield for 15 years.

City are currently 15 points clear at the summit of the table with Liverpool 18 behind in fourth place.

But a win for Klopp's men would see them go level on points with second-placed Manchester United and Chelsea one place behind.

Pep Guardiola stoked up the rivalry before the game as he appeared to laugh of comparisons between Mo Salah and Lionel Messi.

Liverpool‘s Egyptian striker has been one of the Premier League‘s best performers this campaign, netting 17 times.

But Pep did not look impressed when asked if he is similar to the five-time Balon d'Or winner.
