Manchester United's U23s relegated from Premier League Division One in embarrassing showing

The Red Devils’ Under-23s had their fate sealed by Derby, who beat West Ham 1-0 on Monday night.

The result left United’s B Team five points off safety with just one game remaining in Division One of the Premier League 2.

A 1-1 draw with rivals Manchester City on Friday had given United a glimmer of survival hope.

But Derby’s win, combined with Sunderland’s emphatic 4-1 victory Leicester on Sunday, saw Jose Mourinho’s back-ups condemned to Division Two for next season.

They will soon be facing sides including West Brom, Stoke and Newcastle, but still have to play Everton this Friday before the Division One season ends.

It means devoted United fans have been left with little to cheer in recent days.

The Red Devils’ senior players denied City the Premier League title with an epic comeback at the Etihad nine days ago.

But they suffered a humiliating 1-0 defeat to Championship-bound West Brom on Sunday, handing City their coveted piece of silverware.

However, United remain in the FA Cup and need to get past Tottenham if they want to earn a place against either Chelsea or Southampton in the final at Wembley next month.
