ARSENE WENGER has confirmed that Mesut Ozil has seen a specialist over his knee injury.
Ozil has carried the problem for a fortnight and missed Arsenal's draw at West Brom on New Year's Eve.
He returned for the 2-2 draw with Chelsea on January 3, despite Wenger admitting that Ozil was a doubt for the game.
The German then trained ahead of the Gunners' FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest.
But Wenger says Ozil, 29, has now been forced to see a specialist amid fears that the injury is worse than first feared.
Ahead of the EFL Cup semi-final at Chelsea, Wenger said: "He is recovering from his knee problem.
"He has seen a specialist today, we hope it will be short term.
"He came in yesterday and couldn’t practice. We hope for Sunday."
Ozil is out of contract at the end of the season and Wenger is hopeful that he will be able to persuade him to stay.
However, fellow contract rebel Alexis Sanchez looks certain to leave, whether in January or in the summer on a free.
Sanchez was named on the bench against Chelsea as City try to negotiate a deal that would see him arrive at the Etihad this month.
Explaining his decision to leave Sanchez on the bench against Chelsea, Wenger said: "You cannot explain every single decision, that is the decision of the day.
"He’s completely focused, has given a lot recently and is ready to come on and play his part in the game."
