With Philippe Coutinho’s Barcelona release clause set at £400million, where does he now rank in the top ten?

PHILIPPE COUTINHO finally got his wish in landing his £145million move to Barcelona this weekend.

The Brazilian star, 25, had hoped to leave in the summer, but Liverpool's stubborn rearguard delayed the move by around six months.

However, the La Liga giants announced they had signed Coutinho on Saturday evening – inserting a £400m release clause into his contract.

While that fee seems utterly ludicrous, with the world-record transfer fee "just" £198m – set by ex-Barcelona forward Neymar when he moved to Paris Saint-Germain – it is only the tenth-highest in the world.

But who are the other nine? And just how expensive are those at the top of the pile?

Somewhat unsurprisingly, Real Madrid have made their top stars near-impossible to buy in recent years.

In fact, eight of the top players are from Los Blancos – including Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, who are joint-top at an astonishing £886m each.

To put that into context, any club wishing to sign the Galacticos duo – should the club not accept an offer – would have to spend over FOUR times as much as the current world record.

Lionel Messi unsurprisingly comes in third at £626m, just ahead of Real Madrid pair Isco and Marco Asensio on £620m.

Four more Real stars – Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Dani Ceballos – sit joint-sixth on £443m.

Top ten release clauses

=1. Cristiano Ronaldo – £886m
=1. Karim Benzema – £886m
3. Lionel Messi – £626m
=4. Isco – £620m
=4. Marco Asensio – £620m
=6. Gareth Bale – £443m
=6. Luka Modric – £443m
=6. Toni Kroos – £443m
=6. Dani Ceballos – £443m
10. Philippe Coutinho – £400m

That means Coutinho's sky-high release clause is still somehow only good enough for tenth…

As things stand, the "Little Magician" will have that clause in his contract for the next five-and-a-half years.

Interestingly enough, Neymar – the world's most expensive man – does not feature in the top ten.

Reports suggest the Brazilian does not have a release clause in his PSG deal, while others claim the fee would be exactly the same… at £198m.
