Shakhtar Donetsk captain Darijo Srna admits Fred is signing for a Manchester club but refuses to say which one

Both United and City are locked in a two-way battle for the powerful 25-year-old midfielder.

Jose Mourinho is desperate to bolster his midfield with Michael Carrick retiring and Marouane Fellaini refusing to sign a new contract.

Meanwhile noisy neighbours and Premier League champions City have been tracking Fred for a number of months.

Fred is rated at a whopping £50million and Pep Guardiola eyes him as a successor to Fernandinho.

And it appears the battle for his signature will go down to the wire after Srna spilled all the beans in a live Instagram video.

Celebrating their Ukrainian Cup final, the pair were on social media where Srna told viewers: "Let's go Brazil. Champions, champions.

"Fred now is going to Manchester. Doesn't know if City or United. Let's know."

City were thought to be favourites to land his signature after their chiefs met with the club earlier in the season.

And Shakhtar’s chief executive Sergei Palkin fuelled speculation by revealing: “Fred will leave in June. If not to Manchester City, then to Manchester United.

“He is ready for the best championships. In addition to being very good, Fred is very professional.”

Meanwhile former manager Mircea Lucescu claimed Fred was definitely off to City.

He said: "Shakhtar Donetsk's best player is Fred in the centre of midfield.

"He will go to City like Fernandinho before him."
