Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino says refs need help from VAR after handball errors against Watford

MAURICIO PELLEGRINO called for the immediate introduction of VAR in the Prem after Southampton were robbed by a blatant DOUBLE handball.

Blundering ref Roger East failed to spot Abdoulaye Doucoure first use his right hand to divert the ball past keeper Alex McCarthy then his left to steer it into the net.

And Pellegrino said: “It was obviously a handball. To live with this injustice is really hard. I have never seen this type of mistake in the Premier League before.

“We have to try using video technology in the Premier League as every team sport  technology has helped make better decisions. So why not football?

“I won’t speak to the referee. I tried to speak to the fourth official but nothing will change with a chat. My comments won’t change anything.

“Our players were  protesting and the referee still did not go over to the assistant.”

And SunSport’s expert, former top Prem whistler Mark Halsey, was right behind Pellegrino.

He said; “Watford’s last-minute equaliser would have been ruled out in a matter of seconds by the VAR system — it was a clear handball.

“It was a poor decision by Roger East, who will have known as soon as he got back in the dressing room that he made a key match error.

“Roger really should also have been helped out by his assistant, who  was in the perfect position to see Abdoulaye Doucoure put the ball past keeper Alex McCarthy with his hands, not his head.

“And the Southampton manager has every right to be upset.

“I understand that many people would like to see Doucoure face  retrospective action for deceiving the  officials but that won’t happen.

“That rule is only for simulation — diving in other words — and the FA will not take any action on this one.”

The Hornets were heading for another defeat when Troy Deeney set up Doucoure for his controversial equaliser.

And even Deeney admitted VAR would have ruled out the goal.

He  confessed: “Southampton will feel like it’s a loss. If VAR comes in we probably wouldn’t get that but today we got it. It’s the luck of the draw.”

Watford boss Marco Silva added: “It’s not an easy moment for the opposition but decisions can go against you.”” target=”_blank” title=”Click to share on Twitter
