Southampton eye Brendan Rodgers as Celtic manager is put high up on list of potential bosses to replace sacked Mauricio Pellegrino

SunSport understands the English side’s vice-chairman of football Les Reed, who advises Chinese owner Gao Jisheng, is a big admirer of Rodgers.

After the sacking of flop Argentinian Mauricio Pellegrino he placed the history making Hoops gaffer high among his list of replacements.

Rodgers signed a four-year deal at Celtic in April, 2017, worth close to £2.5 million a year.

That salary and likely seven-figure compensation figure would not deter Saints, who face a huge fight to maintain their top flight status.

Rodgers, also linked with Arsenal, is homing in on an unprecedented second successive clean sweep.

That chance to make further history could yet be enough to ensure he resists a move by Southampton.

Saints chief Reed sees his brand of attacking football, ability to improve players – like Rodgers dramatically has at Celtic since May 2016 – and tactical nous as being perfectly suited for the St Mary’s Stadium.
