CHRIS HUGHTON has prepared a £2million bid for James Collins to join Brighton.
The West Ham centre-back, 34, is wanted at the Amex Stadium with Hughton desperate to bolster his defence during the window.
He wants Premier League experience at the heart of his back-line and will take advantage of Collins having less than six months left on his current Hammers deal.
Collins has forced his way into David Moyes’ thinking in the last month and started three Premier League games.
But he is yet to agree fresh terms to keep him at the club for a seventh straight season, after rejoining West Ham from Aston Villa.
That has opened the door for Hughton to swoop before the deadline and giving support to Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk at the heart of his defence.
Hughton has relied on his central defenders to play in almost EVERY game in the Premier League and wants competition to ensure Brighton stay above the relegation zone.
Collins was also coming off the back of the European Championship semi-finals at the start of last season, then played in more than half of West Ham games in the Premier League during the campaign.
But they risk losing him for no fee if he gets to the end of the season without agreeing fresh terms.
Collins has made just eight appearances in all competitions this season, two of which came in the EFL Cup.
