WWE’s Bayley reflects on Sasha Banks’ Elimination Chamber betrayal

The first women’s Elimination Chamber match featured many memorable moments but none more so than Sasha Banks turning on her best friend Bayley.

WWE has hinted at cracks in their friendship ever since last year’s WrestleMania, when Bayley retained the Raw Women’s Championship in a Fatal 4-Way including Banks.

Plenty of water has passed under the bridge since then, including Sasha eliminating Bayley from the first women’s Royal Rumble match in January and losing to her a fortnight ago on Raw.

Last night at Elimination Chamber, the two BFFs joined forces to tackle Absolution’s Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose, before zoning in on Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss.

Bliss fled to the roof of a chamber pod but the allies pursued her, only for Sasha to offer Bayley a helping hand, then betray her with a savage kick sending her pal crashing down to the steel floor.

With their friendship blown wide apart, Bliss capitalised by pinning both rivals, leaving them destined for a showdown tonight on Raw and a possible clash at WrestleMania 34 .

Less than 24 hours removed from the epic battle, Mirror Sport caught up with Bayley, 28, to chat about her chamber debut and what’s next for her and The Boss.

The first women’s Elimination Chamber match last night was a great success, with many fans saying it eclipsed the men’s match later on in the show. What were your thoughts on the match and what does that reaction mean to you?

Thank you. I haven’t been able to read any tweets or anything like that because I just feel like I’ve been on such a high since last night. It’s been just incredible to know that we are doing all these matches and being able to be in the same kind of spotlight as the guys.

We all put a lot of pressure on ourselves to make sure that WWE giving us these opportunities, they don’t feel like they made a mistake, or that we’ve failed them or anything. We do put a lot of pressure on ourselves to make sure we have a really good performance and I feel like last night everybody did such a great job of really making this history-making match a memorable one.

I honestly felt comfortable as soon as the bell rang. I was really intimidated going into it obviously and really scared of all the things that could go wrong, or anybody getting hurt, but I felt really comfortable. And it felt like the crowd was so ready for it and so into it. I think it turned out perfect… except I didn’t win. Not quite perfect ha ha. But pretty perfect.

You didn’t waste any time before you started climbing the chamber wall like Spider-Man, first to escape Sonya Deville and then later to pursue Alexa Bliss. What’s it like up there?

Ha ha. Yeah, it’s so scary. I didn’t think I was going to be scared because in the ring I’m always so comfortable… I don’t know, I feel like I’m untouchable in the ring. But honestly, climbing to the top of the pod, standing up there, it was really, really scary. My legs felt like Jell-O! Ha ha.

But you have a goal in life and to achieve what you want, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. You had to face your fears in that match, that’s for sure. You knew what you were signing up for.

Everyone is talking about your longtime friend Sasha Banks turning on you, by offering a helping hand to get onto one of the pods, then kicking you in the face to knock you down. Ever since your feud and classic matches in NXT, fans have clamoured to see the two of you work a feud against each other again. Do you feel the time is right for your story to come full circle?

I would love for that to happen and I really do think that we have such a great chemistry and it’s just a natural bond, that it doesn’t matter when it happens, we can pick it up anywhere. Not to sound cocky or anything, but I just think we have a really good connection. Whenever we have the time to tell that story, we would be able to. And last night after what she did, I think now is a good time! So I would love to start that up and get some payback.

You’ve said you haven’t had the chance to go on Twitter, but did you see the memes comparing the moment to Scar dropping Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion King?

Yeah I did, I felt that really, especially after she tweeted me that GIF. So it felt like she kind of already had a plan. I feel stupid, I should have seen it coming!

Hopefully you’ll get the chance to gain some revenge, at WrestleMania 34 perhaps. That would be fantastic.

Thank you.
