Australian family almost murdered by coral in The Happening-esque incident

M Night Shyamalan must have a time machine, because the plot of The Happening has basically just happened in real-life.

An Australian family narrowly escaped death after being attacked by a coral reef they were growing in their home.

How? Well, according to The Washington Post, the family in Adelaide cleaned up the glass tank that the coral was living in and then went to bed as if nothing was wrong.

They then woke up several hours later struggling to breathe, with their youngest child ending up in an intensive care unit as the whole family were hospitalised.

It turns out that when they cleaned the tank, the zoanthid coral reacted to the cleaner as if a predator and released a deadly toxin that spread throughout the house.

“I don’t want to create panic,” Aurelia Tubaro, a toxicologist at the University of Trieste in Italy, said of the risk. “We have to inform people.”

If you remember, The Happening employed a not-dissimilar plot where the plants on the planet are killing off people by releasing a deadly toxin.

It’s a pretty terrifying prospect – perhaps Shyamalan warned us with his 18% approval-rated movie?

That will teach us to laugh at serious threats. After all, look what happened with Donald Trump.
