Fans of The Big Bang Theory should be very excited about the sheer amount of Sheldon Cooper they’ll be getting this autumn.
Not only will Jim Parsons reprise his Primetime Emmy Award-winning role on the CBS sitcom, but we’ll also get a look at his early years in the spinoff Young Sheldon. Check out the first trailer below:
Long before the labs of Caltech, way before falling in love with Amy and even before his bromance with Leonard, Sheldon was a quirky little genuis trying to fit into his deeply religious family.
The future of the King of Bazinga is played in Young Sheldon by 9-year-old Iain Armitage, who recently impressed TV viewers as Shailene Woodley’s lonely son in HBO’s smash hit Big Little Lies.
While most 9-year-olds are busy with the finger paints (like Sheldon’s twin sister, for example), the boy genius is already embarking on high school.
The sassy and precocious Sheldon quickly manages to annoy his teenage brother, the entire student body and even his teachers with his surprisingly stinging putdowns and supreme intellect.
This sitcom also introduces us to a younger version of Sheldon’s mum Mary, who Laurie Metcalf has so brilliantly played in The Big Bang Theory all these years.
Taking up the role of Mary Cooper in this spinoff will be Scandal’s Zoe Perry. It brings her career full circle because she previously played a younger version of Laurie Metcalf’s legendary character Jackie in Roseanne.
Jim Parsons brought Young Sheldon to CBS as executive producer, and he’ll also be narrating the series. Iron Man and The Jungle Book‘s Jon Favreau is both producing and directing the pilot too.
Young Sheldon begins airing at 8.30pm ET on Thursdays this autumn on CBS, right after brand new episodes of The Big Bang Theory.
