Emma Willis has called on Channel 5 to renew Big Brother, amid heavy speculation that the franchise could be axed.
The current deal between Channel 5 and production company Endemol expires at the end of the year, and there has been no word yet on whether Big Brother or Celebrity Big Brother will continue in 2019.
Still, Emma believes that this January’s CBB series shows that there is still plenty of life yet in the franchise.
“I’m hoping it’s not the last Big Brother,” she told The Sunday People. “I hope they recommission it. I love it. They did brilliant things in January.
“I think they could do that for the summer series.”
The presenter added that she thinks comparisons between Big Brother and Love Island are unnecessary, stating that they are two very different shows.
“It’s not about beating anybody,” Emma said. “Love Island is Love Island, and Big Brother is Big Brother. Big Brother shouldn’t try and compete with a show or become like Love Island. It’s nothing like it.
“They have different audiences. There are people who want to watch people in their bikinis on a beautiful island, copping off with each other. That’s because we all love a bit of romance and watching love blossom.
“But there are a lot of people who don’t want to watch that. And those people may want to watch Big Brother. They will remain with it and they should be catered for.”
Channel 5 is said to be taking new show pitches for a potential replacement in the event that a new deal with Endemol cannot be agreed on.
The broadcaster is also thought to be considering a number of other options, including potentially scrapping or shortening the civilian version or cutting the franchise’s budget.
