Strictly Come Dancing judge, Bruno Tonioli has broken down in tears during an interview on Desert Island Disks, when talking about a heartbreaking moment from his past.

The 62-year-old opened up about the loss of his mother, alongside a string of close friends and relatives, while speaking to Kirsty Young on BBC Radio 4’s Christmas edition of the podcast.

He played Rod Stewart’s version of In My Life, and explained: “This song is dedicated to all the people that have passed away.

“In spite of what has happened in my life, I might have moved away – hopefully I will keep moving – but they are still part of me, they are still… I’m getting emotional.”

The Italian judge also claimed Rod Stewart’s iconic song was “one of the best poems ever written”, and added: “All these places had their moments/With lovers and friends I still can recall/Some are dead and some are living/In my life I’ve loved them all.”

Bruno’s revealing interview also exposed the fact that his gruelling schedule filming both Strictly and Dancing With the Stars had taken its toll on his health.

“This year I had no gaps… it was a total overlap all the way through,” he said.

Addressing his unprecedented week off the BBC show, which shocked viewers, Bruno added: “I said, ‘You have to give me a week off because I don’t have time for my body to re-energise,’ and it was agreed.

“I didn’t just say I didn’t want to do it. I would never do that, I’m a pro.”

Noting that his flamboyant persona was draining at times, he said: “I wouldn’t have the energy to sustain that 24 hours a day,

“The show is so glitzy, so glamorous, so larger than life, that the only way to approach it is as an entertainment. You want to pop out of the screen and draw them in.”

The judge also addressed rumours that the real reason for his Strictly break was to date 29-year-old hunk, Matt Law, as it was reported at the time.

He said that the trip to LA was nothing to do with his love life, and added: “It was part of my contract because, physically, it’s going to kill me.”
