Call the Midwife wrapped up its seventh series on BBC One tonight, and we were still feeling the emotional hangover from last week’s tragic episode.
The nurses and midwives of Nonnatus House were still grieving for poor Barbara Hereward (Charlotte Ritchie), but they were soon struggling with a work overload as the closure of a nearby maternity home left them with an influx of new patients.
But viewers still had plenty of time for crying over poor Barbara and her bereaved husband Tom (Jack Ashton):
In one of tonight’s stories, a widowed grandfather-to-be Stanley (David Bamber) struggled to take care of his best friend Donald (David Calder) as he suffered with Alzheimer’s.
And things took another turn when it transpired that the pair were actually in love.
Viewers were having their hearts melted by the couple:
At the end of the episode, Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt) had a beautiful birthday party thrown for her which was full of reflection – and that got the tears flowing all over again:
Call the Midwife will be back on our screens at Christmas for its festive episode.
