Catfish is coming back – with an amazing twist we’re very excited about.
MTV has commissioned a spin-off, Catfish: Trolls, which aims to unmask those online trolls once and for all and highlight the seriousness of cyber bullying and harassment.
Hosted by Charlamagne Tha God and Raymond Braun, the 10-episode series will be dragging some of the internet’s most vocal trolls from behind their computer screens and finally into the light.
“The digital component is what’s new but we’re still looking at the tried and true principles that young people face,” Chris McCarthy, president of MTV, told Variety.
“So much of it plays out in the social and digital world. Our shows need to reflect that.”
The original Catfish follows people falling in love on the internet, only to find that one of them isn’t who they actually said they were.
One of the standout episodes followed a chap who truly believed he was in an online relationship with Katy Perry. Yes, the actual Katy Perry.
The fascinating episode saw Spencer completely convinced that he was dating Katy – even letting the boys know that she’s sent him some unreleased songs… via YouTube links. Yeah, PUBLIC links.
“It was an immediate connection. A million ‘I love yous’ back and forth. It was pretty cool,” Spencer explained, before revealing the engagement ring he had made for her, which he said cost him “25%” of his savings.
Catfish: Trolls will air on MTV in the US in September.
