Christian Bale hasn't watched The Dark Knight Rises since Aurora shooting

Despite playing the title character in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, Christian Bale says he can’t bring himself to watch The Dark Knight Rises because of the mass shooting that occurred during a screening of the film in Aurora, Colorado in 2012.

During a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Bale discussed why he’s avoided his final film in the series. Asked about the movie, he said, “very sadly, I have not been able to watch that film since because of Aurora. I have not been able to sit down and see it without thinking of that.”

In 2012, a gunman opened fire during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, killing 12 people and injuring 70 others. Bale traveled to Colorado to meet with victims and hospital staff following the tragedy.

Although the film still holds tragic association for Bale, he did say he’d “love to be able to [see it] one day.” The Hostiles actor also mentioned in the same podcast that he hadn’t seen Ben Affleck’s Batman performance, though he is “interested.”

When it comes to watching movies, however, Bale isn’t the guy in charge, he told podcast host Josh Horowitz: “I tend to go see films that [my kids] want to see.”
