Colin Farrell talks real heart bypass surgery for The Killing of a Sacred Deer on The Graham Norton Show

Colin Farrell has revealed that he attended a real heart bypass surgery in preparation for his role in The Killing of a Sacred Deer – and found the whole thing rather disturbing.

The actor stars alongside Nicole Kidman and Alicia Silverstone in the Yorgos Lanthimos-directed movie that is already picking up awards season buzz.

Teased as something that starts as a drama but quickly descends into horror territory, The Killing of a Sacred Deer follows a charming surgeon (Farrell) who is forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice when the behaviour of a teenage boy (Barry Keoghan) he has taken under his wing turns sinister.

Nonetheless, it turns out it was actually preparation for the movie’s more practical aspects that turned the Fantastic Beasts actor green.

As revealed on tonight’s (October 13) episode of The Graham Norton Show, which also features Kidman, Jane Fonda, Bryan Cranston, Matt Lucas and Niall Horan, Colin revealed he isn’t exactly cut out for surgeon life.

In fact, he found the whole thing quite nauseating.

“I attended a real heart bypass surgery – it was disturbing and fascinating. I turned green and had to step out of the room,” said Colin.

“Even though the patient was alive and survived, it screamed ‘cadaver’.”

The news isn’t ideal – given that The Killing of a Sacred Deer opens with the super close-up of a live human heart during cardiac surgery.

Best avoid the screenings then, Colin…

The Killing of a Sacred Deer is released on November 3.
