Don’t expect to see Colin Firth fighting his way through international terrorists to free his kidnapped family anytime soon.
While it’s true that the Academy Award winner gets to kick some serious ass in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Colin prefers to think of his action movie roles as more of an anomaly than a new career path.
When Digital Spy recently caught up with Colin, he rather humbly admitted that he truthfully has no designs on becoming an action hero like Liam Neeson.
“After the first [Kingsman], there were some offers like that,” he remembered. “But I realised very quickly that you’ve got to get the context right – with someone like me, anyway.
“I’m not just a guy who’s believable if I showed up in just any action context and started doing roundhouse kicks. It worked because it was implausible, and the humour was pitched right.
“There’s just enough of a send-up for people to be able to accept it. If I tried to go in as a badass on an earnest basis, I’m not going to get away with it.”
To prove just how disinterested he is in becoming an action hero, Colin’s next major role will be in the long-awaited sequel Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!.
Colin is candid in referring to the original Mamma Mia as one of his favourite movies, despite the fact that it was ransacked by critics when released a decade ago.
“I saw a journalist actually changed colour when I said that was one of my favourite things I’d done, because I think it doesn’t pass the snob test very easily,” he joked.
“But I do think it is incredibly unusual to find a piece of entertainment that hits common ground. Because, frankly, it doesn’t matter what you think of ABBA – you know it.
“Certainly, if you’re my age, you grew up with it playing somewhere, or wherever. When I failed my exams or got dumped by my girlfriend. It wasn’t on my terms, but it was playing on some jukebox.”
Kingsman: The Golden Circle opens on Wednesday, September 20 in the UK and on Friday, September 22 in the US. Watch a trailer below:
