Coronation Street’s Catherine Tyldesley opens up about ‘emotional last day’ and says she hopes to bag a spot on Strictly Come Dancing

The actress, 34, confirmed she was leaving the ITV soap in December last year and celebrated her time on the programme with a beach-themed leaving party at Manchester’s Impossible bar recently.

She was joined by many of her co-stars including Jane Danson, Georgia Taylor, Jennie McAlpine, Antony Cotton and Shane Ward amongst others and she has now opened up about why she decided to leave the serial.

She told OK! Magazine: “I’ve been there for seven years and I think the fact that my sisters [Jane Danson, who plays Eva’s half-sister Leanne Battersby, and Georgia Taylor, who plays Leanne’s stepsister Toyah] were with me for my last scene made it even more emotional.

“They’ve become my best friends. I’ve been with them for 12 hours a day and then all of a sudden I’m not going to be.

“Obviously we’re going to keep in touch, but it is a huge change for me, but it’s an exciting one.”

Catherine says it was a tough decision to leave Corrie but wants the chance to explore other career opportunities.

And the star could soon pop up on television screens again as she’d love to take part in BBC ballroom dance contest Strictly Come Dancing.

On the future, she said: “I’ve started going to auditions and I’ve been put up for some really exciting jobs. I’d love to do a gritty drama, but I want to try as many genres as possible.

“I don’t watch much reality TV but the one show I do watch is Strictly Come Dancing. I adore it. That’s the only one I would possibly do.”

Catherine plans to spend more time with her son Alfie and would also love to do some travelling.

She announced her plans to leave Coronation Street at the end the of last year after arranging her exit with soap bosses.

At the time, she said: “Coronation Street has been a dream job for me which is why this was such a difficult decision to leave.

“Eva has been such fun to play over the last seven years, and who knows, one day she might storm the cobbles of Weatherfield again.

“In the meantime I’m excited about the future, new acting projects, and spending time with my family.”
