In tonight’s Coronation Street, young Summer Spellman will reveal a special initiative she has planned to honour Aidan Connor in touching scenes.
Aidan took his own life in heartbreaking scenes last week, which has left the Connor family in turmoil as they struggle to deal with what has happened.
So in response, Summer has come up with an idea for a mental health initiative which she thinks will be a positive thing to do in the aftermath of Aidan’s suicide.
Her guardian, Billy Mayhew, caught Summer using forums for those affected by a lowed one who has taken their own life, and urged her to talk to him about her feelings.
Tonight Billy will urge Summer to meet with Carla and Jenny Connor about her idea, the ‘Speak and Save’ campaign, which will encourage young men to talk about their issues in the hope of helping stop someone else from going down the same path as Aidan.
Carla and Jenny are naturally touched by Summer’s idea and are amazed at his mature approach to Aidan’s death – especially when she says she is hoping to do the initiative specifically in his name.
The two women fully support the idea and offer Summer all the help they can to make it a success – but will Aidan’s dad Johnny Connor feel the same?
Coronation Street has been praised for its sensitive dealings with Aidan’s storyline and the light it has shed upon a taboo issue.
On Wednesday last week, when a special hour-long episode was aired to show the aftermath to Aidan’s suicide, more than seven million people tuned in and it was the most-watched thing on TV that evening.
Coronation Street airs tonight at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
