The Crown‘s Vanessa Kirby is leaving Buckingham Palace behind to hit the highways with theFast and the Furious.
Kirby, who recently exited her role as Princess Margaret in Netflix’s The Crown as the period drama moves forward in time for its third season, is in final talks for a high-octane role in the upcoming Hobbs and Shaw (via Variety).
This spin-off of the main Fast and Furious series pairs up Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham for a side adventure with Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde director David Leitch, while Vin Diesel is off working on the next proper sequel.
Kirby will be the latest member of the Shaw family introduced on-screen. Of course, Statham plays international badass Deckard Shaw, the brother of past Fast and Furious villain Owen Shaw (Luke Evans).
Their mother, Magdalene Shaw, had a brief appearance in last year’s Fast & Furious 8, and was played by the legendary Dame Helen Mirren. Kirby will be Deckard and Owen’s sister, an MI-5 agent.
Director David Leitch recently chatted with Digital Spy about Hobbs and Shaw, and he expressed hopes that the spin-off will maintain “some of the DNA of the Fast universe” while creating “something fresh and different for these characters”.
“Hobbs and Shaw come from the agent-and-spy world,” he added. “It’s obviously about their banter and their relationship, but it’s more about expanding their world and their connections, and creating a family in a slightly different universe. It’s going to be fun.”
Hobbs and Shaw is set for release in US cinemas on August 2, 2019, having been delayed from its original July 26 release date. A UK date hasn’t yet been set.
