Denise Welch gets emotional as she opens up about ‘disastrous’ booze-up

Denise Welch almost cried today as she opened up about a "disastrous" booze-up that could have wrecked her relationship.

The former Loose Women star, 59, revealed how giving up alcohol had changed her life.

Speaking on Lorraine today, she opened up about giving partner Lincoln Townley an ultimatum by telling him to give up alcohol or their relationship was over.

She reminisced: "Lincoln and I met in a bit of a tabloid flurry and things were pretty tough and I was in a dark place, for my own reasons, and Lincoln was a functioning alcoholic, for his own reasons.

"So the fact that we got together was quite incredible at the time but we realised that we had a wonderful, wonderful relationship and the only time it was being destroyed was when we were using alcohol."

Speaking about his reaction to the ultimatum she gave him, Denise said: "His fear of losing me was so great that he stopped."

The actress then went on to speak about her ‘out of control’ drinking and the moment she realised that she had to stop.

"I was touring in the show Steel Magnolias and I didn’t think I had as much of a problem because I was unable to drink some nights because I was going on stage the next day," she said. "And two weeks later I went to a function after the show and I said to Lincoln ‘If I get drunk, will you tell me?’ And he said to me, ‘Darling, you’re getting drunk and paps are taking photos through the window’."

She then said that she got angry and swore at him.

"I woke up in the morning with myself plastered all over the papers and it was a disaster. Basically I knew that I would lose him unless I went on the same path," she said.

Denise admitted that she "gets quite emotional" talking about it as she wished her mum was there to see her "sober life".

But she added: "She was alive for three weeks after I’d given up so she would know I was on the right path."
